The Language of Music

About Us

The Language of Music Project embodies the marriage of poetry and classical music. Launched in November of 2019, this project aims to renew appreciation for classical music through a literary lens. Often considered antiquated, classical music can be revitalized through an unconventional literary medium. These two media are inextricably entwined. Poetry is a means of immortalizing what is valuable to one’s identity, and composers strive to encapsulate emotions and intentions in their music. Users can write and post poems inspired by pieces of music they love.  Likewise, composers looking for inspiration may find it among the poems. The symbiotic marriage of poetry and classical music fosters creativity and expressiveness of thought, which spur positive social change.

Essentially, the Language of Music Project has four components:

  1. An open forum for people (composers, writers, or poets) to post their contributions via Facebook. Ideally, creative artists can not only share their love for their craft but also discover one another and collaborate with one another.

  2. The Language of Music Ensemble, a music and poetry group whose members play music and write poetry inspired by the music. Our current ensemble consists of Isaac Jin (a violinist), Joseph Yoon (a cellist), Daniel Choi (an oboist and poet), and Stella Schick (a poet).

  3. A research paper exploring how writers have historically influenced classical composers.

  4. A video series. While a research paper provides an important foundation for working through my ideas, it rarely garners interest beyond intellectual circles. Educational Youtube videos aimed at middle and high school students present this material in an entertaining and accessible way.
